Bribery isn't always the act of giving someone what they want, it could be the act of not doing something that they don't want. for example, 'I won't tell your secrets if you...'
I think that this is the kind of bribery that is automatically thought of as being bad. And yes I believe that the idea of gaining a certain position unfairly is the worst thing about bribery, as well as the 'bullying' that would have been used to get you there.
